Defense Application and Intention to Defend

The following form will guide you through the Dissertation Defense process. Please complete this form once the quarter and week you will defend is confirmed. Event logistics and flyers can be submitted at a later time. This form generate a ticket and email to kick off the documentation for your defense.

The purpose of this form is to ensure your event is listed in the This Week in Neuroscience Weekly email. Event must be submitted the Thursday before Monday's release.

@Health Sign in may be required. Completion of this form is required for non-routine events, new initiatives, or council/committee meetings with food. Events that have been approved by the program in the Summer can forego the request form.

NGP Access and Enrichment: Travel and Emergency Grants

NGP Access and Enrichment Grant

The Neurosciences Graduate Program Diversity Committee in collaboration with GEPA Diversity is soliciting applications for financial support and student development travel awards for the current academic year. Funds for this grant undergo annual review and may be subject to reallocation during the academic year. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and applications should be submitted before June 1st annually.

Master’s Degree Application Process

Students may apply for the Master’s degree during Fall, Winter, or Spring Quarter. The process includes two steps: the Application and, if approved, the Final Report.

Before You Apply

You must have completed all NGP course requirements and 36 total units (excluding rotation courses) in order to apply.

Please let your advisor know that you intend to apply for the Master’s degree.

MD/PhD students are not eligible.

Eligibility Checklist

Requirement Details
Coursework All NGP course requirements must be completed.
Total Units You must have completed at least 36 total units, not including rotation courses.
Quarter of Filing Applications may be sent in Fall, Winter, or Spring prior to Week 3. Applications sent after Week 3 will be noted and filed the next quarter
Advisor Notification You should notify your advisor before submitting your application.
Student Type MD/PhD students are not eligible. Previous recipients of a UCSD Master's degree are not eligible

Quarterly Filing Timeline

Step Timing Notes
Step 1: Application Due during Week 3 Students submit materials to the Program Administrator by email. Admin initiated Docusign. 
Step 2: Final Report Filed during Week 8 if approved The final report is then routed and completed before the quarter ends.
Final Processing By approximately Week 9 Approved filings are finalized and submitted.

Submit the Following to the Program Administrator

  • Your degree audit
  • Confirmation that your doctoral committee is complete
  • Confirmation that your permanent mailing address is up to date in TritonLink

How to Obtain Your Degree Audit

Degree audits are available through TritonLink: Degree Audits at UC San Diego

Steps to Run and Save Your Audit
  1. Log in to MyTritonLink using your UC San Diego credentials.
  2. Navigate to Advising → Degree Audits, or select Degree Audits from the MyTritonLink tools menu.
  3. On the Request an Audit page, locate your currently active graduate program.
  4. Click Run Declared Programs to generate an updated snapshot of your academic progress.
  5. Select View Audit to review your progress.
  6. Review the status of:
    • Major requirements
    • Minor requirements, if applicable
    • College general education requirements
    • University-wide requirements
  7. Save a copy by downloading the PDF. Audits are automatically deleted from the system after 7 days.

Additional Checks Before Filing

Item What to Confirm
Doctoral Committee A complete doctoral committee should include 4 members with UC San Diego faculty appointments. Faculty at Salk or Scripps may introduce committee approval nuances, so please inquire with the graduate program if needed.
Mailing Address Ensure that your permanent address is correct in your student record through TritonLink. Your diploma will be mailed to your permanent address on file.

When you are ready to apply, email the Program Administrator with your materials attached.

Subject: Master’s Degree Application Submission – [Your Full Name]

Dear Program Administrator,

I would like to apply for the Master’s degree this quarter. I have attached my current degree audit for review.

I have also confirmed that:

  • my advisor is aware that I am applying,
  • my doctoral committee is complete, and
  • my permanent mailing address in TritonLink is up to date.
