Graduate Application Assistance Program

In an effort to increase the number of students from underrepresented and/or disadvantaged backgrounds applying to Neuroscience PhD programs, we invite prospective applicants to participate in NGP-GAAP, or the Graduate Application Assistance Program. NGP-GAAP is designed to increase the number of applications the UCSD Neurosciences Graduate Program receives from underserved and marginalized individuals by providing one-on-one mentorship from current students.

Students of all backgrounds and/or demographics are welcome to apply to participate, especially those from traditionally disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Applicants who come from underrepresented minority groups (e.g. Black/African American, Chicano/Latino, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Asian/Asian American, mixed-race POC)
  • Applicants who identify as LGBTQIA+ and/or gender-nonconforming
  • Applicants who identify as women
  • Applicants who identify as persons with a disability
  • Applicants who have experienced or are experiencing financial hardship (i.e. eligible for Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for two or more years, were or are currently eligible for Federal Pell Grants, or received support from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) as a parent or child)
  • Applicants who were the first in their family to attend college/universitIes
  • Applicants who were or currently are homeless
  • Applicants who were or currently are in the foster care system

NGP-GAAP will arrange one-on-one, introductory meetings between prospective applicants and current NGP students, who will answer questions and may assist by reviewing application essays and/or facilitating mock interviews.

General questions or comments can be sent to the NGP Administration at neurograd@health.ucsd.edu.
